21 Preguntas
con Penguin Audio

Penguin Random House is a well-known publishing multinational company. Penguin Audio (Spain) contacted me with the idea of creating visuals for a new interview format. They created an audio-only interview with 21 questions for their YouTube channel. The ask was to craft an engaging animated visualizer that I would create once and their team could adapt to each interview. That's when templatizing comes into play.

The template had to have 3 parts: an intro with the name of the section, the main interview, and an outro with the logo.
After exploring the key visuals with a moodboard, color palette, and later on, a storyboard.

Structure of the template

To build the template, first, we need to know which elements have to be editable and which elements are going to be the same for all interviews. Here's a list of editable elements:

  • Intro:
    • Name and last name.
    •  Title of the interviewee (Usually, "Author of [book name]").
  • Main interview visual:
    • Audio waveform (it reacts to the audio file).
    • Name and last name.
    • Title of the interviewee.
    • The interviewee's picture.
    • Progress bar around the picture (as a circle).
    • Horizontal progress bar (under all the elements).
    • Phone element:
      • Book cover.
      • Book title.
      • Author's name.
      • Progress bar on the audiobook player (corresponds to the interview length).

Some elements were directly related to the length of the interview (progress bars) or the audio file itself (audio waveform).
Swapping the images was an easy task using Essential Graphics in After Effects.  One of the key parts of the template creation was to make sure all the text elements would fit in the template. No matter how many characters the text has when modifying the template, the design needs to stay consistent. To achieve that I used Expressions in After Effects.

Goal and results

The goal was to create a colorful and modular visualizer for a new section on Penguin Audios' YouTube channel. They wanted this section to stand out from their more serious YouTube videos, which usually use black as their main color.

So far, the results have been great. The template has been used for six interviews, and they had more than 62k views in total.
